Overview

IONOS (formerly 1&1 IONOS) is the hosting arm of United Internet, a German internet conglomerate with 25+ million customers. They're one of the largest hosting providers in Europe by customer count, and they own substantial infrastructure — 100,000+ servers across 10+ European and US datacenters.

IONOS offers everything: shared hosting, VPS, cloud servers, dedicated servers, managed WordPress, email hosting, and domain registration. The breadth is impressive. The execution is variable.

Infrastructure

IONOS operates its own datacenters in Germany, the UK, Spain, and the US. This is significant — unlike many hosts that rent rack space from Equinix, IONOS owns and operates facilities. Their German datacenters are ISO 27001 certified, which matters for enterprise compliance.

The network is solid. IONOS peers directly with major European exchanges (DE-CIX, AMS-IX, LINX) and operates its own backbone between datacenters. Latency within Europe is excellent; transatlantic latency is average.

Product Lines Tested

We tested two products:

VPS Linux S — €1/month intro, €4/month renewal. 1 vCPU, 512MB RAM, 10GB SSD. The absolute entry point.

Cloud Server M — €15/month intro, €30/month renewal. 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, 80GB SSD. Mid-range cloud compute.

Performance

VPS Linux S (entry)

• Disk I/O: 100-180 MB/s sequential
• Network: 200-400 Mbps
• CPU: Intel Xeon E3/E5, shared
• TTFB: 150-350ms (Frankfurt to Frankfurt)
• RAM: 512MB — this is genuinely tight for modern workloads

The entry VPS is a 512MB plan, which is unusually small by 2026 standards. It runs Linux and basic web servers fine but cannot handle anything memory-intensive. Docker is out. Redis is borderline.

Cloud Server M (mid-tier)

• Disk I/O: 250-450 MB/s sequential
• Network: 400-800 Mbps
• CPU: Intel Xeon Gold, dedicated cores
• TTFB: 80-180ms (Frankfurt to Frankfurt)
• RAM: 4GB — comfortable for most single-server workloads

The Cloud Server line is where IONOS gets competitive. The performance is good, the network is fast, and the scalability options (up to 32 vCPU, 128GB RAM) cover serious workloads.

The Good

Enterprise compliance. ISO 27001 certification, GDPR-compliant infrastructure, and proper data processing agreements. For European businesses with compliance requirements, this is a genuine advantage over smaller hosts.

Phone support. IONOS offers phone support in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Response times are reasonable (<5 minute wait) during business hours. For people who want to talk to a human, this is rare in hosting and genuinely valuable.

Plesk licensing. Many IONOS VPS plans include a free Plesk Web Admin Edition license. Plesk licenses normally cost €11-15/month separately, so this is meaningful value if you use Plesk.

European infrastructure scale. 10+ owned datacenters, direct peering at major exchanges, proper backbone. The network architecture is enterprise-grade.

The Not-So-Good

The control panel is a mess. IONOS Cloud Panel is over-engineered and confusing. Functions are buried in nested menus; settings are inconsistently organised; the search is unreliable. Coming from DigitalOcean or Vultr, the UX is a significant downgrade.

Aggressive upselling. The checkout flow adds multiple upsells (backup, SSL, domain privacy, SEO tools) pre-ticked. Unchecking them is tedious. This feels adversarial — you're fighting the interface to pay only for what you want.

Renewal pricing doubles. The €1/month VPS becomes €4/month after the intro period. The €15/month cloud server becomes €30/month. These are not small increases — budget based on renewal pricing, not intro pricing.

Cancellation friction. IONOS requires cancellation 30 days before the next billing cycle. Cancel on day 29 and you pay another month. The cancellation process involves multiple confirmation screens designed to retain.

Variable datacenter performance. We tested instances in Frankfurt (excellent) and the UK (average). The infrastructure quality varies by location — Frankfurt is clearly the priority.

Pricing Reality

Who Should Use IONOS

• European businesses with compliance needs. ISO 27001, GDPR, proper data processing agreements.
• Plesk users. The free license on VPS plans is genuine savings.
• Phone support preference. Multi-language phone support is genuinely rare.
• Short-term projects. The €1/month intro pricing for 12 months is hard to beat (just cancel before renewal).

Who Should Look Elsewhere

• UX-sensitive developers. The control panel is painful compared to DigitalOcean or Vultr.
• Transparent pricing seekers. The intro-to-renewal jump is too aggressive.
• Non-European workloads. IONOS is EU-centric; US and APAC performance is average.
• API-first teams. The IONOS API exists but is not as clean or well-documented as competitors.

Verdict

IONOS is a legitimate enterprise-scale host with real infrastructure, proper compliance certifications, and phone support — things smaller hosts can't match. But the user experience is weighed down by an over-engineered control panel, aggressive upselling, and steep renewal pricing.

At intro pricing, the value is good. At renewal pricing, you're paying enterprise prices for an experience that doesn't feel enterprise. The €1/month VPS is an excellent way to test IONOS without commitment — just remember to cancel before the price jumps.
