Overview

Linode has been around since 2003 — a veteran in the VPS space. It built a reputation for no-nonsense, reliable service at honest prices. In 2022, Akamai acquired Linode, and the dust is still settling. Prices have crept up, some features have evolved, but the core infrastructure remains solid.

Linode occupies the middle ground between budget hosts like Hetzner and premium options like DigitalOcean. You get reliable hardware and good network performance without the developer-fluff marketing.

Performance

Linode uses AMD EPYC processors across most of their lineup. The 2GB Standard plan (2 vCPU, 50GB storage) consistently delivered ~900 MB/s disk throughput in our tests — competitive with DigitalOcean's Premium AMD tier.

What stands out is consistency. Under concurrent load, performance degradation is minimal and predictable. No surprises.

Datacenters

Linode has 13 global datacenters. The UK has London (LON1), and European options include Frankfurt, Madrid, and Warsaw. The Asia-Pacific coverage is better than DigitalOcean, with Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai.

The Good

Reliability. Linode's SLA is 99.9% uptime, which translates to ~8.7 hours of downtime per year. In practice, we see better than that. Their infrastructure team knows what they're doing.

Managed Kubernetes. Linode's Kubernetes Engine (LKE) is genuinely good. Control plane is managed, nodes are your responsibility, pricing is transparent. If you want k8s without the AWS/GCP complexity, LKE works.

Consistent pricing. Unlike some competitors that have opaque billing or surprise overage charges, Linode's pricing is straightforward. What you see is what you pay.

The Not-So-Good

Post-acquisition uncertainty. Akamai is a CDN company, Linode is an IaaS. The fit isn't obvious. So far, service quality hasn't degraded, but some users report slower feature development and support ticket response times.

Price increases. Since the acquisition, some prices have increased 10-20%. The Nanode ($5) plan is still there, but standard plan prices crept up. Not dramatically, but noticeable.

Documentation. Decent, but not at DigitalOcean's level. For common tasks, you'll find what you need. For edge cases or newer features, you might be digging through forums.

Pricing Context

Bandwidth: 1-8TB included depending on plan, $0.005-0.02/GB overages.

Kubernetes (LKE) Pricing

Control plane: free (yes, genuinely free). Worker nodes billed like standard instances. 3x $24 nodes = $72/month for a production-ready k8s cluster.

Verdict

Linode is a safe, reliable choice. The Akamai acquisition raises some long-term questions, but the infrastructure quality hasn't suffered yet. If you want predictable performance without surprises and can accept slightly higher prices than budget options, Linode delivers.

The sweet spot is the $24 Standard plan — enough resources for most production workloads, backed by a 99.9% SLA and decent support.

Who This Is For

Linode is right for engineering teams that want reliable, predictable infrastructure without surprises. The managed Kubernetes offering (free control plane) is genuinely useful for teams adopting containers. The 99.9% SLA and consistent performance make it suitable for production workloads where stability matters.

It's less ideal for cost-minimising European projects (Hetzner), teams wanting the best documentation (DigitalOcean), or anyone concerned about post-acquisition direction under Akamai.
