Overview
Vultr is the host you pick when you need servers in Tokyo, SΓ£o Paulo, and Johannesburg β and you need them now. With 30+ datacenter locations spanning every continent except Antarctica, Vultr's global footprint is its headline feature.
Founded in 2014 and backed by Constant (the company behind the Choopa network), Vultr owns its infrastructure. They're not reselling β they operate their own network backbone. This matters because it means they actually control the experience end-to-end.
Performance
Vultr offers two main compute lines: Cloud Compute (standard) and High Frequency (premium). The difference is meaningful.
Cloud Compute uses Intel Xeon processors with standard SSDs. Fine for light workloads, but you'll feel the difference on disk-heavy operations.
High Frequency uses AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon processors paired with NVMe storage. This is where Vultr shines. The 1GB HF plan ($6/month) routinely outperforms competitors' $12/month plans on disk I/O benchmarks.

Network performance varies by location, but generally delivers 1-10 Gbps depending on the plan. The High Frequency line consistently hits higher throughput.

The Good
Global reach without complexity. Deploy identical configurations across continents from a single API call. This is genuinely useful for latency-sensitive applications β put servers where your users are.
High Frequency compute is fast. The NVMe storage on HF plans delivers consistent 500+ MB/s throughput, and CPU steal is low (<1% under normal load). These are genuinely premium instances at mid-tier prices.
Clean automation story. Vultr's API v2 is well-designed. Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible, and Packer all have first-class Vultr providers. If you're building infrastructure-as-code, Vultr is a pleasure.
Hourly billing with a low ceiling. You pay by the hour with a monthly cap. Spin up a dozen instances for testing, pay a few dollars, tear them down. Useful for CI/CD and ephemeral environments.
Free DDoS protection. Every instance gets basic DDoS mitigation at no extra cost. It won't handle targeted application-layer attacks, but network-layer protection is included.
The Not-So-Good
No managed services. Vultr offers block storage, object storage, load balancers, and Kubernetes β but everything is infrastructure. There's no managed database, no managed Redis, no "we handle it for you" tier.
Support is inconsistent. Vultr uses a ticket-based system. Response times range from minutes to hours depending on time of day and severity. There's no phone support, no live chat for technical issues. If you're running production workloads that need immediate human intervention, this could be stressful.
Block storage performance varies. Vultr's block storage (separate from instance storage) has inconsistent performance. Benchmarks show anywhere from 50 MB/s to 200 MB/s depending on the block size and I/O pattern. It's usable but not great. Don't run databases on it.
Control panel is dated. The customer portal works, but it's not pretty. It's functional, which is fine β you'll spend most of your time in SSH anyway. But compared to DigitalOcean's polished dashboard, Vultr's feels like a downgrade.

Bandwidth is pooled per instance (not account-wide). Overage is $0.01/GB β reasonable but not nothing.
Who Should Use Vultr
- Global apps. If your users span continents and latency matters, Vultr's 30+ locations are hard to beat.
- Infrastructure-as-code teams. Clean API, good Terraform provider, ephemeral instances are cheap.
- High-traffic websites. The High Frequency line handles bursty traffic well.
- Anyone who wants quick test instances. Hourly billing with a low ceiling is developer-friendly.
- Managed services users. Vultr doesn't offer managed databases, managed Kubernetes, or managed anything.
- Tight-budget European workloads. Hetzner offers better price-to-spec for European-only deployments.
- Support-dependent teams. If you need phone support or guaranteed response times, look at managed hosting.
- Beginners. Vultr assumes you know what you're doing. There's no onboarding wizard or guided setup.

Vultr's global footprint is a genuine differentiator. If you need servers in 30+ locations with good performance and clean automation, Vultr is an excellent choice. The High Frequency line delivers real performance at fair prices, and the API is a pleasure to work with.
For European-only workloads, Hetzner offers better value. For US-centric managed services, DigitalOcean provides a more polished experience. But for global reach with good performance, Vultr is the answer.
